In a recent development that has sent shockwaves throughout the aviation world, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an Unapproved Parts Notification (UPN) on September 21, 2023, regarding a critical bushing part supplied by AOG Technics. The crux of the matter? This part lacked the essential FAA production approval, and associated documents were found to be “falsified.” So how the whole so-called ‘AOG Technics scandal’ evolved?

AOG Technics, known for its involvement in the aerospace spare parts industry, had supplied these questionable parts, raising concerns about the safety and the authenticity of components used in the aviation sector. Airplane parts suppliers and, especially, marketplaces for aerospace parts and supplies, play a crucial role in supporting the MRO sector, airplane operators, and the whole aviation industry in an unforeseen situation like such.

TAP Air Portugal, one of the mayor European flag carriers, was first to raise the alarm early this Summer. They have discovered that some parts, namely, engine bushings, installed on CFM56 engines, were worn out significantly, despite having been documented as completely new. This led to the discovery of false documentation for the parts supplied by AOG Technics.

How The AOG Technics Scandal Unfolded

UK-based broker AOG Technics, a name that might have gone unnoticed in the vast realm of aerospace suppliers ever since the company was founded back in 2015, suddenly found itself in the spotlight. The FAA’s UPN demanded immediate action: the removal and quarantine of uncertified bushings to prevent their installation until their eligibility could be verified.

After the London High Court issued a ruling, instructing AOG Technics to provide the record of its transactions with supplier and to giving more details on any CFM56 and CF6 parts it has sold along with the documentation for such parts, the company has gone completely silent.

These parts had been used in CFM56 engines, a workhorse of aviation, frequently seen in older-generation Airbus SE A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft.

The CFM56 engine, manufactured by CFM International, has long held the title of the world’s best-selling aircraft engine. The ripple effect of this scandal is undeniable, but what does it signify for the MRO industry?

Implications for the Aircraft MRO Industry

The MRO industry’s ability to respond effectively will determine its resilience and continued trustworthiness in the eyes of airlines and passengers. There probably will be several implications, as the aviation MRO sector is poised for increased regulatory scrutiny and stricter compliance measures. Moreover, there could also be a quality assurance reassessment as MRO facilities will need to revisit their procedures and quality control principles. This leads further to the issue of the security of supply chains as MRO companies will need to collaborate with trusted suppliers and enhance supply chain transparency to prevent counterfeit parts from infiltrating the system.

Also, do not forget that reputation is everything in the MRO industry. MRO companies may need to rebuild or reinforce their reputation, demonstrating their commitment to safety, quality, and compliance. Yet, those market players that adapt swiftly and demonstrate their commitment to safety and quality may find new business opportunities. Airlines and regulators will be seeking reliable partners in the MRO sector who can provide the highest levels of assurance and compliance.

The reminder of importance of reliable airplane parts suppliers and marketplaces

The AOG Technics scandal serves as a stark reminder of the critical role that MRO companies play in maintaining the safety and reliability of the aviation industry. While these developments present immediate challenges, they also offer opportunities for innovation and growth for MRO companies that can adapt to the evolving landscape of aviation safety and compliance.

The short-term implication, which is already manifesting itself, and is about to undoubtedly have further impact on the future of the whole sector, is the growing need for a timely supply of critical parts for the affected airplanes. Such parts, which are crucial to keep them flying. “Airplane parts suppliers and, especially, marketplaces for aerospace parts and supplies, play crucial role in supporting the MRO sector, airplane operators and the whole aviation industry in an unforeseen situation like such.” – points out Toma Matutyte, CEO of Locatory.com. “The industry’s ability to respond effectively will determine its resilience and continued trustworthiness in the eyes of airlines and passengers.”

As the aviation industry embarks on this journey of introspection and reform, the MRO sector will stand at the forefront of ensuring that aircraft continue to fly safely and reliably. The implications of the AOG Technics scandal may have a scope big enough to reshape the MRO industry, with an enduring commitment to safety and mutual trust among the business partners within the sector.

Following the MRO forecast that 9,000 shop visits and engine overhauls are expected in 2024, the aviation sector gears up for an era of extended asset life.

In a changing aviation landscape demand has consistently outpaced production, Locatory.com CEO, Toma Matutyte, notes, “Our data suggests that the drive for lean MRO will continue across an extended and agile aftermarket. As aircraft retirements are pushed out and demand outpaces production, the total forecasted quantity remains unchanged. The average age of aircraft in service is 12 years, with an average forecasted retirement age of 22 years. This industry shift underscores the paramount importance of agile asset management. The forecasts predict a staggering increase in shop visits and engine overhauls for 2024, necessitating the strategic application of technology to meet this burgeoning demand.”

The significance of efficient MRO in asset management is further highlighted by the surge in overhauls anticipated.  Approximately 7,686 engine overhauls are anticipated globally in 2023, and even greater numbers are projected for 2024 and 2025, totaling 8,837 and 8,995 shop visits, respectively. Engine MRO is expected to be worth $39.3 billion in 2023, or 45% of the entire commercial aftermarket. Global engine shop visits are still below pre-COVID-19 levels despite attempts to increase capacity, with the industry seeking to reach pre-pandemic levels by the second half of 2024. The engine MRO supply chain has seen ongoing difficulties, such as OEM manufacturing limitations, protracted lead times, and material shortages made worse by international events. The aftermarket will need to increase both efficiency and cost containment to meet demand into 2024 and 2025.

The aviation industry is at a pivotal juncture where the total cost of ownership value proposition for customers must be elevated through lean and cost-effective MRO solutions. The extended life of aircraft in service presents a formidable challenge and an extraordinary opportunity in the aftermarket segment. According to Locatory.com CEO, Toma Matutyte, “As operators grapple with the reality of extending aircraft service beyond traditional retirement ages, agile asset management becomes the linchpin for success.”

Leading MRO practice leverages advanced technology and a global network of suppliers to streamline supply chains, optimize inventory management, and ensure minimal downtime by embracing lean principles and cutting-edge data analytics, extending asset life while reducing operational costs. “This is where the MRO sector will need to be to win capacity and meet demand” – Locatory.com CEO, Toma Matutyte.

Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) are crucial in the aviation industry. To ensure the safety and effectiveness of flights, the intricate machinery used in the aviation sector needs to be precisely and promptly maintained. However, it has been difficult to achieve cost-effective MRO in the aviation industry, so adopting agile and integrated procurement techniques can help the aviation sector achieve cost-effective MRO.

While MRO management has traditionally been a labour-intensive, manual process, today’s data-driven solutions can enable the MRO supply chain to be optimized as the sector expands. Despite COVID-19’s disruptive effects, the global MRO market is anticipated to grow from $686 billion in 2021 to $787 billion by 2026.

Historically, the aviation industry has grappled with fragmented MRO procurement processes, limited access to spare parts, and a tendency to rely on long-established supplier relationships. While trust in suppliers is essential, it can sometimes lead to inefficiencies, inflated costs, and a lack of access to a diverse range of spare parts. Three insights can be gained from these experiences.

Achieving Balance through Comprehensive Information

Firstly, organizations must have access to numerous channels that offer up-to-the-minute information on the current availability of spare parts in various circumstances in order to achieve balance in aviation MRO. This realization highlights the requirement for a central system that collects data from diverse sources. Aviation MRO experts can swiftly determine which replacement parts are in stock, their condition, and their pricing using a single, unified dashboard using such a system. According to Toma Matutyte, CEO of Locatory, “Better decisions can be made because of this real-time visibility, which also reduces aircraft downtime and improves inventory control.”

Using an AI engine, easyJet, the airline, for example integrated Aerogility on top of its current MRO management and transactional systems. This allowed them to analyze their MRO data and make maintenance choices better and more quickly.

Easy Access for Enhanced Flexibility

Second, success in aviation depends on having quick access to MRO procurement resources. The quick-paced nature of the sector necessitates a streamlined procurement procedure. The adaptability of aircraft MRO teams is increased through agile procurement platforms with user-friendly interfaces, effective search tools, and smooth order processing. This translates into quicker response times, shorter lead times for purchasing spare components, and increased operational agility all around. Easy access equates to higher efficiency in a field where time is of the essence.

According to the 2020 In(Sight) Report from WorkMarket, 53% of workers believe automation may free up to 2 work hours per day (240 hours per year) and 78% of corporate executives believe it can free up to 3 work hours per day (360 hours per year).

Avoid Overpayment

Lastly, the aviation sector frequently has long-standing connections with reliable suppliers. While maintaining these partnerships is critical, it is also crucial to regularly assess the costs and quality of suppliers. The final insight emphasizes the possibility of overpaying while using just approved vendors. Periodically, aviation MROs must evaluate the market, compare costs, and look into alternative suppliers. Without sacrificing the calibre and safety of aviation operations, encouraging competition can result in significant cost reductions. “Aviation MROs should make sure they are getting the best value for their procurement budget by expanding their supplier base and encouraging competitive bidding,” explains Matutyte.

The Power of Agile & Integrated Procurement in Aviation

The aviation industry’s struggles with cost-effective MRO can be overcome with the use of agile and integrated procurement strategies. The efficiency of MRO, cost savings, and overall competitiveness may all be improved for aviation firms by implementing a comprehensive strategy that takes into account these three insights. Professionals in aviation MRO can quickly make informed decisions thanks to integrated procurement solutions, which provide a single platform where information flows without interruption. These platforms also make it easier for teams and departments to work together, expediting the entire MRO process and promoting safer and more economical aircraft operations.

Due to the failure to effectively address unscheduled maintenance events known as Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situations, the aviation industry has been grappling with significant losses in potential revenue, estimated at a staggering $6 billion annually. So how to optimize AOG parts availability amid supply chain crisis?

With ongoing global supply chain disruptions in the post-pandemic environment and the unavailability of spare parts and components, the industry faces formidable challenges that place OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), airlines, and aftermarket service providers at a high risk of losing even more potential revenue.

The impact of AOG events on commercial aviation during the summer season, resulting in missed opportunities, is highly significant. Managing such situations adds unexpected pressure, further exacerbated by the prevailing difficulties in the supply chain. But how long will it take for the industry to overcome the supply crisis? And is it possible to minimize aircraft downtime during the peak demand period despite the current obstacles in spare parts and component supply?

How long will the supply chain crisis last?

While airlines eagerly anticipate new aircraft deliveries to increase capacity and fulfill existing flight bookings, manufacturers grapple with workforce shortages, material scarcities, and global shipping bottlenecks. The major European OEM company Airbus estimates that supply chain delays are projected to persist in the industry throughout 2023 and potentially extend into the early months of the following year.

In comparison, its competitor Boeing has a more worrisome projection. According to the US-based manufacturer, the supply chain will continue to pose challenges in new aircraft deliveries for an extended five-year period until 2028. To compensate for delays in new aircraft arrivals, some operators have reviewed their aircraft retirement plans. However, the issues related to parts and component supply during unscheduled maintenance events remain unsolved.

Optimizing AOG parts and component availability

The restoration of supply chains will likely span several years, resulting in prolonged lead times for aircraft spare parts and components in cost sensitive AOG situations. Therefore, it is beneficial to review and update key strategies dedicated to enhancing parts availability.

According to Toma Matutyte, the CEO of Locatory.com, operators are strongly advised to constantly diversify their supplier pools by engaging multiple marketplaces, both domestically and internationally, while placing a greater emphasis on modern global platforms. Such an approach should mitigate the impact of potential disruptions or delays in parts arrival during high-season aircraft grounding.

“In the face of persistent global supply chain disruptions, the aviation industry must prioritize optimizing spare parts sourcing to minimize revenue losses and reduce the risks associated with AOG situations. Building strong supplier relationships, diversifying the existing supplier base, and leveraging data analytics are key proactive measures to be taken for the industry to navigate through the supply chain crisis and ensure uninterrupted operations,” explains Matutyte.

In recent years, the aviation industry has faced numerous challenges, with one of the most significant being issues with the aircraft part supply chain. Locatory.com, an aviation marketplace for aircraft spare parts and repair capabilities, reports that there are solid implications, related t the boom of aircraft part aftermarket, even following the accumulating issues in the industry.

According to Toma Matutyte, CEO of Locatory.com, aircraft manufacturers continue to struggle with increasing backlogs, with Airbus backlog of 7,254 aircraft and Boeing backlog of over 4,500 aircraft after Q1 2023. “Due to excessive backlog, airlines are forced to continue operating aging aircraft that require more maintenance and repairs. This situation leads to a rise in demand for replacement parts in the aftermarket. Going forward, this trend will be felt more acutely in developing regions, where airlines still rely on their older aircraft, and acquiring new aircraft is challenging.”

Furthermore, the ongoing geopolitical turmoil and COVID-19 aftereffects have made it more challenging to obtain manufacturing materials, worsening supply chain issues. This has resulted in significant delays in the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OME) production of new aircraft parts, creating a shortfall in supply and a greater need for used parts. Consequently, more and more companies are turning to the aftermarket to fulfil their replacement needs.

As the demand for aircraft parts in the aftermarket continues to grow, online platforms like Locatory.com are expected to attract more attention from airlines, aircraft lessors, and MROs worldwide as the boom of aircraft part aftermarket approaches. “Online platforms offer a broad range of readily available used aircraft parts, which make it easier and more cost-effective for buyers to locate the parts they require,” Matutyte explains.

While the issues in the aircraft part supply chain will likely continue to affect the industry in the future, the aftermarket will play a crucial role in meeting the demand for replacement parts, particularly in still-developing regions. While aircraft manufacturers work to address the root causes of these supply chain issues, airlines are turning to the aftermarket for solutions, making online marketplaces a viable solution to keep aircraft off the ground.

The average life span of a commercial jet is about 25 years, and something like 12,000 of them and other aircraft are expected to reach the end of life in the next two decades. That’s an average of about 600 airplanes each year. What happens to all those planes when they are no longer economically viable and ready to come out of service?

“The retirement of commercial jets is a complex process that requires careful planning and execution. However, it also presents an opportunity for the aviation industry to reduce waste and lower costs through the reuse and recycling of valuable parts. In recent years, the practice of upcycling airplane parts has gained significant momentum. This innovative approach involves repurposing old materials to create unique and innovative products,” explains Toma Matutyte, CEO Locatory.com Marketplace.

Upcycling is a sustainable and eco-friendly way to reduce waste and minimize the environmental impact of discarded materials. By transforming airplane parts into new and exciting items, new life can be breathed into these materials and give them a second chance to shine.

Fuselages can become conference tables. Cowlings, the metal coverings of an engine, can be made into beds. Wings turned into dramatic, one-of-a-kind corporate executive desks. Windows – transformed into mirrors. From furniture to home décor, upcycling airplane parts has opened up a world of possibilities for creative designers and artisans. The unique shapes and textures of these materials lend themselves to a wide range of applications, making them a popular choice for those looking to create one-of-a-kind pieces.

Recycling aircraft parts has been a long-standing practice in the aviation industry. For years, parts have been refurbished to fit on other aircraft or repurposed to create different products, such as circuit boards. This has been the industry standard, as reported by the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA). In fact, AFRA estimates that approximately 80% to 85% of aircraft parts are recycled when an aircraft reaches retirement.

“Despite this, the aviation industry is constantly seeking new and innovative ways to reuse aircraft parts. As sustainability becomes an increasingly important issue, alternative ideas for repurposing these parts are becoming more commonplace,” says Toma Matutyte, CEO Locatory.com Marketplace.

From the Sky to Your Living Room: Turning Aircraft Parts into Designer Furniture

Airbus and Lufthansa are leading the way in transforming retired aircraft parts into stylish homeware collections. The project, called A Piece of Sky, was initiated by Airbus and its Airbus BizLab program, and has resulted in the creation of armchairs, coffee tables, and lamps made from cabin windows and test flight storage data modules. The company has even produced Airbus-branded surfboards made from recycled carbon.

Lufthansa has also joined the trend, launching its Upcycling Collection 2.0 in October 2020. This range of homeware products includes furniture, sculptures, and accessories made from retired aircraft parts, such as a flying coffee table created from landing flaps and a wall bar made from an airplane window mounted onto a wooden box.

These innovative collections not only breathe new life into retired aircraft parts but also offer a unique and sustainable way to decorate modern living spaces. By repurposing these materials, Airbus and Lufthansa are setting an example for other companies to follow in creating environmentally friendly and stylish homeware collections.

The real highlight of this hotel is the Cockpit Suite, which features a fully preserved flight deck complete with all the original instruments. You can live out your pilot dreams and feel like you’re flying the plane yourself.

From Planes to Trees: Christmas Decorations with Aircraft Components

With a variety of parts available, including washers, fasteners, rivets, hinges, grommets, and seals, repurposing them is a breeze. All you need is some ribbon or colored string to tie them onto your tree.

So why not give it a try and see how your tree can take flight with a touch of aviation-inspired flair.

Jet-Set Selfies: Get Ready for the Ultimate Photoshoot Experience

Have you ever dreamed of soaring through the skies on a private jet? While it may not be a reality for most of us, there’s a fun and lighthearted way to experience the high life. Head over to the Selfie Factory at the O2 in London, where you can indulge in a day of make-believe and capture some amazing photos.

The Selfie Factory boasts a range of themed sets, including a luxurious private jet interior. You can snap as many photos as you like.

Sip on Sustainability: Drinks Bars Made from Aircraft Scrap

Raise a glass at your very own custom-built bar that’s been crafted out of upcycled aircraft fuselage. Cheers!

“Upcycling: Transforming Scrap into Stunning Creations! In addition to traditional recycling, a new and exciting market is emerging – one that breathes new life into old parts and transforms them into stunning creations: upcycling. The possibilities are endless, and creativity knows no bounds. Entire aircraft are being converted into luxurious apartments or hotels, while smaller “aeropods” made from fuselage sections are being used as charming conservatories or gazebos. Various companies are also offering unique furniture, as well as stylish bags and accessories crafted from seat covers and life jackets,” says Toma Matutyte, CEO Locatory.com Marketplace.

Upcycling is a fantastic way to reduce waste and give old materials a new lease on life. It’s a sustainable and eco-friendly approach that not only benefits the environment but also allows for the creation of one-of-a-kind pieces that are both functional and beautiful. So, whether you’re looking to add a touch of aviation-inspired style to your home or office, or simply want to do your part for the planet, upcycling is the way to go.
